What Roles Should You Take Up If You're a Toastmaster Newbie

Suggestion to newbies for the roles they should opt for is in the following order:

  1. Ah-Counter

  2. Timer

  3. Grammarian

  4. Speech-1

  5. Speech-2/ Supplementary Roles

  6. Table Topics Master (TTM)

  7. Speech-3/ Supplementary Roles

  8. Toastmaster of The Day (TMOD)

  9. Evaluator

  10. Speech-4

  11. General Evaluator (GE)

This sequence has a meaning. Doing auxiliary roles ensures that you get acquainted with the stage.

Taking Ah-counter ensures that you understand what a perfect speech actually is.

Taking timer then made sure that you start respecting the time.

Grammarian ensures that you are able to pin point minor mistakes as well.

Doing the ice breaker after 2-3 meetings ensures that people now know you as a person.

Taking the speech-2/ supplementary roles allow you to now be more disciplined on stage.

TTM allows you to act impromptu based on people's reaction.

Speech-3 allows you to add more fun in the content.

TMOD let's you be the host. Since, now you have learnt about every role, you are in a better position to lead the meeting, the guests, the members and to be there on the stage, flawlessly.

Evaluator, then allows you to wear the speaker's shoes.

( If you have learnt the art of evaluating the speech, you have started mastering your own speech. Evaluation is indeed the most important role, only an experienced speaker can be best at.)

4th speech allows you to remain grounded.

GE then lets you be an all rounder.

Practice, Repeat, Excel

Refer to Meeting Roles Made Easy - Toastmasters has developed new tools to make playing the roles during club’s meetings smoother, including an “Ah-Counter Script and Log,” “General Evaluator Checklist,” and more. Visit the Club Meeting Roles webpage to download them today!

Please note: During the process, participate in table topics as much as you can, impromptu and relevant speaking is important.

Hope this satisfies the need of most of the members here.

For any doubts, talk to any senior member with whom you feel comfortable taking to, going to. Nobody is going to say a NO.
